The usb method on my host is even worse.

You're running a fairly old GPSBabel, but that shoudl work.

There's some combination of  certain Linux kernels that are known to be compiled with bogus power saving  options that break many USB devices.    Saying which version of which Linux would be most helpful to pair you up with people with pertinent experience.
