Thanx.   While it feels a little uncomfortable to me as a programmer, as a user I like this better.  I've committed this.

I think a user is just more likely to think of this as a different (and incompatible) GPS than as a strain of the chipset that it uses.   The lines of when to split them get fuzzy, but I think it's a win here.
