Just to clarify, I am connecting the unit via serial.

Not entirely sure how to translate this but here is the dmesg if I boot with the unit connected:
swamp@pequod ~ $ dmesg | grep serial
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

Here is the actual error message:
swamp@pequod ~ $ sudo gpsbabel -t -i garmin -o gpx -f /dev/ttyS0 -F test.gpx
GPS_Packet_Read: No DLE.  Data received, but probably not a garmin packet.
GARMIN:Can't init /dev/ttyS0

I tried changing the units interface to NMEA or even text out, and my term / cursor / pointer start to really freak out. Maybe my question is really for a udev forum?

rmmod garmin_gps
chmod o+rwx /proc/bus/usb -R
gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb: -o gpx -F TodaysData.gpx
