That is exactly the two line fix I referred to as an "easy change".  done.  https://code.google.com/p/gpsbabel/source/detail?r=4845

I added it several years ago.  Apparently, I did it badly.

bracketing addItem() with
    if (!formatList_[k].isHidden())
in outputFileOptBtnClicked and outputDeviceOptBtnClicked should be approximately the fix.  If you want to tackle it, that'd be groovy.  Otherwise I'll get it next week or so.

I've never really been happy with this aspect of our UI in general.  Presenting 200-ish options in a list is just overwhelming. It should be a combo box with incremental search or, better yet, default to only the 8-12 most common formats and some kind of a "don't see what you're looking for?  configure HERE"  that takes you to the settings with incremental search added.

It's been in the back of my mind for years, I've just never put fingers on keyboards to make it happen.

Maarten,

I am not sure what is new about the format filter, but it is easy change
to apply it to the output format list as well as the input format list.
I am not sure why this wasn't done originally, so I will wait a bit to
see if some history comes up.
