The map could be made to display in various types of map projection.
Particularly Azimuthal and conformal projections see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection .
For these type of projection;
The angle from the base station would be true.
The distance or elevation may be true.

I've added an image that shows what an azimuthal projection would look like. This one is azimuthal equal distance. The metadata required is the longitude and latitude of the center of the map, both for rendering the map and coordinate transforms. The grid would need to be eliminated or replaces with a compass rose of some form. Also when the footprint covers the point opposite the center, there would need to be a warping. Warping in this circumstance would create a ring around the outside of the map.
