I want to make sure that its transmissions are secure when using public wifi. What ports is it checking on so that I can ensure to push that traffic through my proxy setup? TIA!

It uses https for everything important, so port 443 out to Google's servers. A handful of things still use http but I'm sure you already allow outgoing on port 80. It also uses port 49815 locally-only for inter-process communication, but I don't think you'd need to open that, as it only binds to localhost.
