I would like to see the ability to set geographic boundaries for different rulesets, i.e. set the rules for a given set of squares to be different. This would allow for persistant squares, which are an interesting thing to watch, as well as neat boundary area interactions. Just a thought, though at least allowing permanent squares to be placed would be nice. Granted it breaks the hatching algorithms in all likelyhood, but still.

This would make a bugger of a rewrite to the cell structure and rendering engine, but it would provide unprecedented flexibility in making variable automata environments, and adding a programmatic hook to alter ruleset information in runtime would allow for infinitely variable automata environments.
