OK. I corrected my error, and now everything is fine with the
following configuration options:

./configure --enable-large-config --enable-gc-debug --enable-gc-assertions --enable-parallel-mark --prefix=/usr/local

(I added --enable-parallel-mark for extra performance).

I'll not try to find out which options are actually necessary.
