I could not obtain any satisfactory results using
"contour".

I would like: black contour lines on a colored
surface.
Using pm3d as color, the surface is quite Ok, but the
lines have the same color :-(, and are then
invisible.
My ultimate goal would have been to have "plateaux"
of color separated by the contour lines. That means
the usage of a limited index of n colors, for n
contour lines...

Please have a look to the brand new gnuplot.sourceforge.net
and its FAQ -- I think you find answer about combining
    contours and pm3d map there.

To the last point: gnuplot does not currently support closed
contours needed for coloured filled contours. But: There is
    an undocumented option
    pm3d at C
which demonstrates how to do colored filled contours.
However, this does not work as the contours are not closed.
You are welcome to contribute an implementation.
