I think I already tried that. I will try that again when I'm at my desk tomorrow. Should it not be possible to use the windows way: write to file t= o communicate with gnuplot? The base cause of Gnuplot.py failing is that os.popen() can't be used if the CWD is a UNC network path. See the link below if you're interested in Microsoft's half-assed rationalization of this particular bit of Windows breakage: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156276/EN-US/ The answer is to change gp_win32.py so that instead of os.popen() it uses subprocess.Popen() with shell=False. However, there are bugs in the subprocess module that you have to work-around: http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Py2ExeSubprocessInteractions Using subprocess.Popen() with the above work-arounds seems to work. It also eliminates the requirement to double-quote a path that contains a string. After I've tested it a little more, I'll submit a patch. -- Grant Edwards gr...@vi... |

Perhaps you have a PATH problem? I'm setting the complete path to pgnuplot.exe in GnuplotOpts. The program works fine when started by: 1) command line from any directory (local or networked). 2) desktop shortcut icon with any 'start in' directory (local or networked). 3) double-clicking an associated file in any local directory. It only fails when one double-clicks an associated fine in a network directory. I've verified that in all cases the correct path to pgnuplot.exe is being used. The program doesn't try to open or access any files in the current directory. All it does is this: #!/usr/bin/env python import sys, math, tempfile,os,itertools,wx from wx.lib.floatcanvas import NavCanvas, FloatCanvas, Resources import wx.lib.colourdb from sectionedFile import SectionedFile import Gnuplot # if we're on a Windows system and there's a pgnuplot.exe file # in our "install" directly, tell the Gnuplot module to use # that instead of whatever's in our PATH sys.stderr.write("cwd: %s\n" % os.getcwd()) if sys.platform == 'win32': installpath = os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(sys.argv[0])) gnuplotpath = os.path.join(installpath,'pgnuplot.exe') sys.stderr.write("installpath '%s'\n" % installpath) sys.stderr.write("gnuplotpath '%s'\n" % gnuplotpath) if os.path.isfile(gnuplotpath): if ' ' in gnuplotpath: gnuplotpath = '"' + gnuplotpath + '"' Gnuplot.GnuplotOpts.gnuplot_command = gnuplotpath; sys.stderr.write( "using pgnuplot at %s\n" % Gnuplot.GnuplotOpts.gnuplot_command) else: sys.stderr.write("didn't find pgnuplot at %s -- hope it's in your path...\n" % gnuplotpath); import time gp = Gnuplot.Gnuplot(debug=1) gp('plot sin(x)') time.sleep(1) gp('plot cos(x)') time.sleep(1) gp('plot tan(x)') time.sleep(1) sys.exit(0) -- Grant Edwards gr...@vi... |

I feel like I've spent the past 3 days beating my head against a wall: no matter what I do, I can't get gnuplot-py to work reliably on Win2K or WinXP. It seems to work fine in the following situations: * Program called "normally" (e.g. python foo.py) with current directory containing pgnuplot.exe and wgnuplot.exe. * Program bundled via py2exe and called via shortcut icon starting in directory containing [pw]gnuplot.exe * Program bundled via py2exe and called via shortcut icon starting in different directory. * Program bundled via Py2exe and called via command-line from anywhere. What refuses to work is when the program is started by clicking on a file whose type has been associated with the program. In that case, I always get an "invalid parameter" IOError when gp_win32.py writes to the pipe in its __call__ method. I've switch gp_win32.py so that it uses subprocess instead of os.popen, and that doesn't seem to help. I get either the same error or I get an "invalid handle" when the process is being started. Can anybody point me towards documentation on how to get reliable operation on Win32? It's really not possible to describe how much I hate working with Microsoft Windows... -- Grant Edwards gr...@vi... |

I just committed a change to Gnuplot.py in r299 of trunk which allows client code to name the option "with_" (note trailing underscore) to avoid warnings and errors with newer versions of Python. I also changed the Gnuplot.py code itself so that it does not use "with" as an identifier. However, for backwards compatibility (and through the magic of Python varargs processing), Gnuplot.py still accepts "with" as an alternative spelling of this option. Thus this change should not break old clients. Regarding your questions: 1. This change should get rid of the warnings, assuming you change your code accordingly. 2. Rename 'with' -> 'with_' 3. Done. Hi there; I use gnuplot-py very often because it is better suited to most of my tasks than other python plotting routines. That much said, I am getting warnings Warning: 'with' will become a reserved keyword in Python 2.6 I have 3 questions. 1. Is there any way to turn off these warnings? 2. Should I be using a different way of setting linetypes, etc. for plotting? d = Gnuplot.Data(x,y,with='lines lt 4') 3. Is Gnuplot.py going to replace the 'with' keyword? I've been using gnuplot-py to plot 2D and 3D wireframes for a while. Now I need to make my programs a little more interactive: the user needs to be able to select lines and points by clicking on them with a mouse. I have found examples of how to do this in Python: http://www.physik.tu-dresden.de/~baecker/python/GnuplotBiDir.py However, that Gnuplot class doesn't have many of the features of gnuplot-py. I'm thinking it would be easier to add mouse-click handling to gnuplot-py than it would be to change my programs to use the above class for the plotting. Has anybody else worked on supporting mouse interaction using gnuplot-py? -- Grant Edwards gr...@vi... |

I am trying to figure out how to plot 3D data. I began with the script " demo.py" that comes with the gnuplot-py distribution. I am only changing what function is plotted but I get the error copied at the end of this email. I am using just a minimal script (also copied below). The formula for m which is commented out does not work, but the current formula for m does work. Can someone help me understand what the problem is? Thanks, Jeremy import scipy import Gnuplot def main(): x = scipy.arange(35)/2.0 y = scipy.arange(30)/10.0-1.5 xdat = x[:,None] ydat = y[None,:] m = (scipy.sin(xdat) + 0.1*xdat) - ydat**2 # m = scipy.sin(scipy.sqrt(xdat**2+ydat**2))/scipy.sqrt(xdat**2+ydat**2) print "len(x): %s" %len(x) print "len(y): %s" %len(y) print "len(m): %s" %len(m) dat = Gnuplot.GridData(m,x,y, binary=0) Chart = Gnuplot.Gnuplot(debug=1) Chart('set pm3d') Chart('set parametric') Chart('set data style lines') Chart('set hidden') Chart('set contour base') Chart.splot(dat) main() python learnGnuplot.py len(x): 35 len(y): 30 len(m): 35 gnuplot> set terminal aqua gnuplot> set parametric gnuplot> set data style lines gnuplot> splot "/tmp/tmpf2ZHuU.gnuplot/fifo" notitle gnuplot> splot "/tmp/tmpf2ZHuU.gnuplot/fifo" notitle ^ line 0: 2 columns only possible with explicit pm3d style (line 16) Exception in thread FIFO Writer for /tmp/tmpf2ZHuU.gnuplot/fifo: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/lib/python2.5/threading.py", line 460, in __bootstrap self.run() File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Gnuplot/PlotItems.py", line 448, in run f.write(self.content) IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe |

I've tried to install gnuplot-py but I've suddenly had a bad problem. I've tried: python setup.py install but I've received: Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 14, in ? from distutils.core import setup ImportError: No module named distutils.core I use a SuSE SLED 10 and these are the packages I've installed: python-2.4.2-18.2 python-numeric-24.2-14.2 python-numpy-1.0.1-0.pm.1 ... Of course I also have installed gnuplot that I can use without problem. I've searched in the interactive interface python->help()->modules and distutils.core doesn't appear. Can anyone help me? Please? Thanks a lot in advance, Stefano C. |

Hi, After i plot graph, I get plotted just one point. It is the first data point, but the rest vanishes from my graph. Say it looks like: ... g.plot([[1,2],[2,2.3],[3,5.5]]) ... So I get plotted jusr [1,2] point. Tried using Gnuplot.Data - the same. By the way, not all demo.py views were plotted, also ! I'm using suse 10.2, python 2.5 (intalled in user space), gnuplot 4.0 and gnuplot-py 1.7. Arturas best P.S. I've been using gnuplot.py a little time ago on Windows XP. And it was OK' ____________________________________________________________________________________ TV dinner still cooling? Check out "Tonight's Picks" on Yahoo! TV. http://tv.yahoo.com/ |

I use gnuplot.py to fit data file functions via x-window. During the fit I get an output on the iteration sequences. Is there a way to suppress that annoying output? > s there an (easy?) way to create a eps file of a multiplot-created > plot? As far as I'm aware, you need to set the terminal type and output before creating the plot: g('set terminal postscript color enhanced "Helvetica" 18') g('set output "'+filename+'"') ... g('set multiplot') and then make the plot as you normally would. I close with g("unset multiplot") g.reset() g('set terminal %s' % Gnuplot.GnuplotOpts.default_term) g('set output') though it isn't really necessary. Gnuplot does not allow replotting (which is what hardcopy() does) when in multiplot mode, unfortunately (if this has changed in a very recent build, please let me know: I'm running 4.0). If anyone else knows of a better method, I'd also be happy to hear of it. Unfortunately, multiplot in Gnuplot can be a bit of a pain, particularly when trying to get several stacked plots to be the same size. Good luck! John |

Dear all, is there an (easy?) way to create a eps file of a multiplot-created plot? I've created 3 three plot using the 'multiplot' option, and it looks quite nice on the screen. But if I use the hardcopy() method on the gnuplot instance, the resulting eps file only contains the output of the last plot() command, and all the other plots are omitted. I've also tried using the replot() command like gp("set term postscript eps enhanced color") gp("set output 'plot.eps'") gp('replot') , but this fails since all the temporary files that gnuplot.py creates are already gone. Any advice? Cheers, Marcus |
