Can some one explain which kind of things could I do with GDL if I'd installed these? It is only a performance reason or also featuring? Some functions are not available without it?

HDF4 and HDF5 are two different file formats. HDF4 is used for example for distributing satellite images by NASA, and HDF5 is used for example for distributing weather radar data by some meteorological services. GDL offers routines to access the data stored in HDF files, so for example you could use GDL to plot a satellite image from an HDF file
or to load and process weather radar data
These are only examples - I guess there are thousands of other contexts where HDF is used
