unsure whether this is to considered a bug:

reading strings from ascii files, these will contain
the line break chars. this is not so in IDL at least up
to v4, maybe 5.

may require workarounds when concurrently using systems
with 1 vs 2 line break chars (my own observation only
under linux) and GDL as well as IDL.

    sorry. mea culpa. but the basic idea was correct. the odd
    behaviour occurs only when reading strings from files on a
    mounted vfat partition (i.e. presumably containing 2-char
    line breaks): they have one of the line break chars still
    appended.
