I have been COBOL programmer for some time. I am currently looking for work and can only find Mainframe work. I have never worked on Mainframes. I trying to create a Mainframe environment to learn. I bought a book named: “Murach’s CICS for the COBOL Programmer”. Is this realistic for me to try and learn Mainframe in this way?
I have tried Hercules in many different favors on both Windows 10, Manjaro Linux and Linux Mint. I have not been able to get to a place to try learning. Does anyone know how to create an environment that would work.
If someone can help, please keep it simple for this stupid programmer.
Thank you in advance…

If you spend the days following Jay's instructions for building a mainframe starter kit you will have a lot of experience in systems programming. Most framers do not get to play as system administrators, and the knowledge is precious.
Thanks to the Hercules s/370 emulator (actually s/390, z), and quirks in copyright laws and international intrigue, IBM was told to ensure sources for 1984-ish copies of MVS were available to the competitions, mostly Japan, I think. Someone got the tapes, fiddled, for a long time, and now the world of free software development has built up to Tk 5, MVS 3.8. And VM/370 for virtualization. Any source code IBM released before changes in copyright laws in the 1970s that did not include an explicit copyright, (most add on products), are "public". Public from the point of view that IBM lawyers have said they will not press for rights to the old code.
Okay, I was contacted by Ralph Linkletter regarding WinCOBOL. I had some problems with installing it onto my PC because of Norton. I was finally able to install it clean. Now
I cannot seem to do anything.
I am going to look at what Brian Tiffin mention above.

No virus.
What do you mean, "Now I cannot seem to do anything " ?
More than a 1,000 downloads - never saw a defect like above.
If you'd like I will walk you thru using WINZOS.

Okay, today I watched a video and noticed a command =Xand I was able to exit the function 'Windows CMD' and 'Dataset Utility'. Then I figured out that =Mwould get me to the main screen. This is starting to make sense.
I have started reading the book I mentioned along with WinCOBOL. i'll report back on
how I am doing.
Thank you Ralph

For the deepest of dives, start with Jay Moseley's MVS 3.8 build up, from the equivalent of a mainframe hardware delivery. Blank.
https://www.jaymoseley.com/hercules/installMVS/iMVSintroV7.htm

Or, to hit the ground running,
https://www.prince-webdesign.nl/index.php/software/mvs-3-8j-turnkey-5
Find other sources of Turnkey builds by binging on google for tk4 mvs
Then sit back and take in some telly with Moshix,

A by the by, the guy that got the tapes, is one of the first infamous internet people, the Tron Guy, Jay Maynard, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Maynard
Modern Rexx, networking, editors, lots of new code in Tk 5, mostly in s/370 assembly, or the GCC 3 compiler port for all the C things. :-)
Have good.

Hi,
the "Master the Mainframe" was renamed to "IBM Z Xplore":
