I have an old laptop and I choose not to start the X
(too slow) but I love gnubiff, so it would be nice
to notify me only by sound and to start without need
to show any X window (like a daemon).

I'm not sure it's possible to do that right now because
gnubiff depends heavily on both glib/gtk and I'm not sure
how they handle he situation where X is not present. Also, I
know there are some other mail notifier that do just what
you want, maybe you can check them first to see if they may
    be a solution for you.

This feature is now available in the CVS version of gnubiff
(2.2.0 branch). The corresponding option is '--nogui'. All
the GTK libraries etc. still need to be present.

Gnubiff 2.2.0 has just been released with support for this
feature. I will close this RFE.

    I didn't have a chanse to test it because I didn't find a
way to compile (configure) gnubiff without FAM support. But
I'm confident that I'll be able to run gnubiff without X so
I think it's ok to close this issue.

Configuring gnubiff without FAM is feature request #1461632.
Any updates on this issue will be posted there.
