Is it possible to run the gnu-Darwin PPC CD as a "livecd" in order to try it out on my mac mini without having to do a full install?

The GNU-Darwin live DVD project, known as polaris, was abandoned when in became clear that it was impossible to use the recent revisions of Darwin without recourse to proprietary drivers.  A prototype bootable live DVD was made, and it was runnable, but not without the non-free drivers.  There are no live CDs to my knowledge.  Polaris was a fat platter, a DVD-R bootable on x86 and ppc.

FYI, this driver problem is the same reason why no further OS installer releases have come from the DIstro since the 1.0 revision.  Polaris will be taken up again when the driver situation is resolved, and a new OS installer will also be produced at that time.
