Here's a question. I'm planning on downloading GNU-Darwin X86 when I get home from work in the morning.
I have two boxes and a notebook.
My primary box is a P4 2.53 GHz system with a 128MB NVIDIA FX5200 video card, 1 gig of PC266 DDR RAM, an 80 gig hard drive and a 30 gig hard drive.
The second box is my web/file server (AMD Athlon slot A 750 MHZ cpu, 20 gig drive, 2 80 gig drives running on an IDE ATA 133 RAID, and 512 MB PC 133 RAM). I don't want to take it down to install another OS right now, but I may take it down near the end of the month and use it for something else as I'll be putting a better system together to run as a server.
My third option is a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S173 with a 1.1GHZ processor, 256 MB PC100 SDRAM, 20 gig hard drive and a Trident Cyberblade XP display adapter.
My question is, does anyone here have an idea if Darwin will run on the notebook?
I pretty much know that it wont run on the P4 because every distro of Linux I've tried has not gotten past booting off the CD, and I've tried a bunch. The P4 will only load Windows for some reason.
The AMD will likely run Darwin, but like I said, I'm not ready to take my server down right now.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys.
Keith.
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
It is best to try the installer CD, which you can try on your server too, without installing. No harm can come from this, if you don't run the installer. If the CD boots, then it most likely that Darwin will work with your hardware. That is more accurate than any prediction of ours.
If the CD doesn't boot, then there is something in your hardware configuration that is not supported. If this happens, you might find the hardware compatibility database helpful in acquiring the necessary upgrades. You can also post your hardware there, to help out the x86 developers.
