i'm curious, what window managers do folks enjoy using?  i've found that twm is good for its simplicity, and bad for its simplicity...

i've tried enlightenment, my favorite outside of the OSX world, but it doesn't play very nice with a mono-mouse, and is something of a pain in rootless mode (my preferred mode).

does anyone have a window manager to suggest that is a little higher than twm in functionality, but plays well in rootless mode?

also, i'm curious, has anyone found a way to run kde satisfactorily on OSX?

    thanks for any suggestions!

My setup is broken right now, but I think I was using sawfish, which is the window manager Ximian GNOME uses by default.

I think (I could be wrong) that sawfish is lighter wieght than the bloated enlightment, a litter faster.  However, if I recall, when right-clicking (I have the popular logitech optical mouse), the background turns a soild color when used rootless, but reverts to the "transparent" state after releasing.  Maybe the newer version are better, the last I played with this was probably aug - sept time frame.

The problems with a single button mouse may just be how XDarwin/XFree86 is setup, I'm not sure if  that is a window manager thing.

I'm really comfortable using the command and option keys as modifiers for the mouse button, although it is a pain when I go back to a three-button system.  I always hit the Alt key by mistake!

Enlightenment is our most popular window manager, which Apple users like, because it "plays nice" with OSX.  My personal favorite is WindowMaker.

and another question on a similar but slightly more technical topic...
what does it take to install a new window manager?  i.e., does it need to be ported, or will it run right out o' the box?
      thanks!
