I find the same thing with certain bible modules. For
instance, the Apostles Bible has no text for the New
Testament, so the only thing you see are verse numbers. The
Bible in Worldwide English has no text for the Old
Testament, but if you select a New Testament book you see
some text.
Have you tried a number of different bible modules?

interestingly, i did an experiment. i have a RH7.3 box where
everything works (i have gnomesword 0.7.3 running). when i
connect to the working box (ssh with X forwarding) from the
non-working box and display the application, it exhibits the
same problem. this makes me think that the problem is down
at the font level in X. but i'm kinda out of my area of
expertise!

I'm out of my depth on this one purely on the basis that I'm
using a different version to yourself so I can't be sure of
the issue.
I'd agree with your analysis. Definitely sounds like fonts
can't be found on the local X server. I take it you are
running from the terminal, there's no useful output?
I wonder if you try running it through strace whether that
would show the fonts it was trying to open.
Sorry - I guess I'm not going to be of much use after all.

Can you try with the latest version (2.0.0) please? I'd like
to check where we are with this issue.
