Google has enable an OAuth support for Gmail's IMAP and SMTP.
http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2010/03/oauth-access-to-imapsmtp-in-gmail.html
http://sites.google.com/site/oauthgoog/Home/oauthimap
After first time clicking on mailto: link or sending file gnome-gmail should open authorization request in default browser. After confirming app will have a authentication key which it should store in gnome keystore.

    From the OAuth howto page:
    3. Your application gets an authorized request token from the authorization server.

Recommended options for accomplishing this are at http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/docs/OAuthForInstalledApps.html

None of these options look to be viable for this application. The only way I could see this working is via a centralized web service that would collect the callbacks and act as a clearinghouse for the clients. That would be hard to secure provably, and would cause many people heartburn.
