As I mentioned in some other bugs, I just finished capturing two of each creature, one male and one female. (Interesting that even trees have two sexes in this game.) I captured the lowest-level creatures I could, and then used them to catch even lower level creatures, until I was capturing mostly level 1 creatures, using five creatures ranging from level 2 to level 5. The idea was to capture all baby creatures and raise them myself, rather than capturing them at high levels, so they'd have high obedience scores when they got big enough to be useful.
As the capturing creatures got down to lower levels, I noticed the game randomly hanging after I selected a terrain to hunt in and before the battle and monster selection windows came up. This happened more frequently as I used lower level creatures to hunt with. With creatures of levels 2, 2, 3, 4, and 5, I fought a level one creature about twice as often as the game hung up. I made myself a gnome launcher that executed "killall gmbattle; rm -f ~/.gnome/GMLock" to reset with when this happened.
When I caught all the baby creatures I wanted and started fighting with level 30, 25, 1, 1, and 1 creatures, to train the little ones quickly without having them do any fighting, this hang-up stopped happening immediately.
