Great to see this interest Rob.

FYI:
James Macgill (key geotools developer) has got an alpha version of GML
rendering into geotools using gml4j.  Last time I was talking with him
he was still having problems with polygons.  So this might be a starting
point for you.

If you checkout the geotools code from http://geotools.sf.net , have a
look at:
geotools/src/uk/ac/leeds/ccg/gml/GMLReader.java

He also has a demo at:
http://www.ccg.leeds.ac.uk/geotools/demos/gml/
