In the Directories window (Options --> Directories), there is the option to add MAME executables. Click Add and then browse to the XMAME executable, and it should pick it up.
I last checked with XMAME 0.106 - let me know if this works. If not, let me know which version you have and I will check it out.
Also, let me know the contents of ~/.gmameui/dirs.ini

sorry that was stupid ,now they are added
unfortunately I have a real problem this time
when I try to change a setting the apply button is grayed out ,all my permission seem fine
it has an option set that won't allow it to continue (the "log debug file" is set to a directory ,but since I can't change or disable it fails)
any ideas?
The .gmameui/dirs.ini file is where the directories are set. You can manually edit that. However, changing the values in the directories window should work.
Are you sure you are running 0.2.2? There's no Apply button in that release, and you are talking about an Apply button that is greyed out, so I'm not sure you are running the most recent release.

I get a message that it can't find xmame ,but I use gxmame so I know there are executables.
is there a way to point it ti them?
Thanks

The latest version, 0.2.2, does not have an Apply button - it automatically sets the fields once they are changed.
they don't apply that's the problem
