I don't exactly know why, but the tray icon dies after
a certain amount of time. Or maybe when the connection
was lost. Or something else. My computer is pretty much
always on, my current uptime is 3 days, and the
gmail-notifier tray icon becomes invisible and
unresponsive. See attached screenshot.

Hmm I don't think so, I do not have any screensaver or
    screen blanking activated.

I confirm this, this is very annoying. When it dies I have
to kill it, and then there is a blank unmovable useless
space left in the notification area where gmail-notify used
to be. It dies at fairly random times.

It happens with my Suse 10.1 / KDE 3.5 installation as well.
I noticed that the tray icon disappears when the tray
refreshes or another icon is added / removed.

Yes I can confirm this happens when changing themes or running
an app that requres a password when the grab screen command is
    used to dimm the screen.

Yep same for me if I change theme's or run certain system
programs changing screen resolution ,theme's etc... I end up
with a blank spot on sys tray but processes show it thier
sleeping. Can kill and run another one put still end up with
    a blank spot on tray.

    Ubuntu 6.0.6.1 gnome
    gmail-notify 1.6.1.-0ubuntu2

This does not occur anymore with Ubuntu 6.06 with all the
    latest updates installed. Cheers!

Hmm actually I started using Specto instead as a replacement
of gmail-notify, so I did not notice if this was fixed in
dapper or breezy, but one thing I know is that it was weird.
Specto does not have this bug, and, as far as I know, I
don't know of any other application than gmail-notify that
does that. I assume this doesn't use eggtrayicon?

Me and my big mouth!!! The behaviour continues well into
Dapper. It just happened again... what can I say, I'm sorry
    about my previous post.

Another confirmation. Latest version of Ubuntu and gmail-notify. I find that the problem seems to occur if my network connection flickers on and off.

This bug is more than 2 years old and my gmail notifier is nearly unusable, some hours after I load it the tray icon is replaced by blank space. OS is Ubuntu 8.04 final.

oh well, you might just want to use Specto in the meantime instead as (go figure why) it does not have this issue.

Hi! I didn't fixed this bug before because I was working on a new version of the notifier. I'm not in conditions of continuing with the development of the new version by now, so I'm going to fix this bug so you can use the notifier without any problems until I can resume the development of the 2.0 version. Please tell me, are you using the 1.6.1.1 version? Thanks.

I'm sorry I posted anonymously, my mistake.

The two previous posts about the disappearing tray icon in Ubuntu are mine.
