This could be very handy -- immediately squares, triangles, and various shapes could add expression to a variety of backgrounds, then later shaped and manipulated in geometry.

This is now available in latest official release is 1.7 r1700.
You can select a custom mask and select a PNG image: alpha channel of the image becomes alpha for the source.
