The 1.1.14a version of the via82cxxx sound driver, as shipped with kernel 2.4.1, totally halts my machine within milliseconds of trying to play sound through it.

insmod-ing the module works fine, but attempting to play sound using XMMS causes a total crash, and looping bleep sound infinitely.

(By the way, esd fails to load, but this didn't work with the previous 1.1.14 version of the driver either.)

    I got similar problem.
I have a new MSI K7Pro-2A mainboard with via82c686B chipset. compiled kernel 2.4.1.
Directly play a .wav file, sometime get sound,
    sometime not.
When I use xine, no sound out, xine halt.
When I play QUAKE, beep forever, system totally halt.

This problem is fixed in the latest version of the driver. You
can download the driver from the download section on this
    SourceForge web page.
