I'm posting this into bugs section instead of mailing list, just so it can be found easier.
I've got a github repo with several patches to gjiten that drop the use of most of obsolete Gnome libraries (gconf being an exception atm.) and ports gjiten to gtk3 (https://github.com/galtgendo/gjiten).
The only catch of those changes is that one of them (that switches to gtkfilechooserbutton) isn't working correctly with gtk2 (with gtk+ 2.24.15), but that's due to a bug in gtk+ (it's supposed to be fixed in the git) - similar bug in gtk3 has been fixed in gtk 3.6 (and backported to later 3.4).

The above is in the light of https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20130124163820.63c78592%40mephisto&forum_name=gjiten-general post.
