I am running powermate in Debian and i would like to get as an output letters and feed them to MAtlab. Does anyone has an idea of how to approach it?

Dasher only requires up and down mouse movement and some way to start and stop movement -- which, to me, sounds like left/right/press.
TBH, I haven't used Gizmod for years though, it stopped compiling well after a few compiler versions. I'm a little impressed you got it running at all. :)

Without going into development details, it sounds like a good candidate for integrating with Dasher... http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/
