I can't say for sure. I haven't tested all the possibilities. But if you create a .git/config file in the project root, when the project is refreshed the listener is fired... GitTeamProviderType.metaFilesDetected(). This is because .git/config and .project are registered in the core plugin.xml file as meta files for our team provider. If you find a situation where the auto-associate is failing, add a regression test.
