Bom dia Luis,

O gisvm2base_20100601.7z está comprimido com o free 7zip.

Tal como indicado na pagina de download:
http://www.gisvm.com/download.html

(está no fim da página, se calhar tenho de o colocar num local mais
visível!)

NOTES:

1. You must unpack the downloaded file (7z) with a file expander program. We
recommend using the Free 7-Zip.

2. GISVM requires you to previously install the Free VMWare Player or any
other product that can run the downloaded VMWare image.
http://www.vmware.com/download/player/player_reg.html

Tens de usar o respectivo programa ou um compatível (o algoritmo é OS).

Se estiveres no Ubuntu, basta:
sudo apt-get install p7zip

e depois,
p7zip -d gisvm2base_20100601.7z

Força aí..
