It does very nicely in very dark tones at 1440.  However, there are a
few things:

1) The black is coming in too quickly on the 870, as you surmised.  I
   haven't tried the EX yet, but I suspect it would be even more
   noticeable.

2) The behavior at 720 dpi is significantly different -- there's much
   more black, and very dark regions look like they're not getting
   enough ink.

3) I think the ink reduction might be a bit too effective -- there
   just isn't enough ink in dark solid colors.

Could you and Jean-Marc discuss this a bit more?  You both have some
very promising stuff, and maybe between you you can figure out how to
combine some of your ideas.
