I'll try to give it a whirl.

I finally got the gs driver running on my system here.  I couldn't figure
out why it worked from within the Gimp but not GS, but, after closer
inspection, I found that I had set the Quality to 4, which was 720 DPI
Highest Quality, not 720 DPI Softweave, which I thought I had been
using.  When I changed the Quality to 2, it worked fine.

I don't know why Quality=4 didn't work, but at least it explains
why I was getting inconsistent results.
