Perhaps this is an obvious question, but _how_ are you printing things 
(eg from the cmdline, an appliation, mobile device, etc).

Secondly, what media is loaded into the printer, and what print size did 
you select when printing?  

The SELPHY family only allows printing a single size for each size of 
media.  It is also possible for the loaded ribbon to not match the 
loaded paper, which would also lead to that error.

What "newer version" are you referring to?  You mentioned you installed 
gutenprint manually, what version did you start with?
