Sven, Karl, and Robert:
ldconfig fixed it - thanks for everyone's input.  A quick test on last
night's repository with my stc740: The image I used is a small tiff of
Rasputin - pale face with deep shadows, wearing a long dark grey coat. 
It provides good test of fleshtones and contrast. The random FS (at 360
and 720 microweave) left some very odd orangish hilights.  Adaptive
hybrid looked pretty good, but showed some dark speckles (patterned) in
a light colored facial area.  I accidently overprinted this on the 760
microweave fs, and the result was surprisingly good, if a tad saturated
:)  As I get time I will try more variations, but would prefer to devote
more time to the gui.

I hope to get the notebook gui out within the next week or two.  I
apologize for the slowness - I recently started a new job and have been
working longer hours, leaving very little free time.
