I ran a few experiments just now. For the test patterns that I use, I've found that ordered dither works very nicely, but I just tried printing a thumbnail of a photograph, and the ordered dither looks awful. Random Floyd-Steinberg works best for that. This should come as no real surprise to anyone, but I think that having the choice of dithering algorithms really comes in handy. At some point this should feed into a set of default profiles for photographs, line art, etc. (which we have a start on).
