I wasn't inferring that you would know the answers to the
questions, I was just posing them so you had an idea of
what was required to get it to work.

The question regarding dithers may be answered in the user
manual that came with the printer (but I doubt it!).

I am trying to join the HP Solution Provider program to see
if the documentation is available.

An alternative is, as you say, to look at the PCL data. I have
written "pcl-unprint" for this, but it may not work on data
produced by anything other than gimp-print!

Since I don't have a 694 printer, I can only suggest what to
look for B-).
