Thanks to you and your wife! I used the Graphic2.prn file, and used beav to modify the file before sending it to the printer. First we printed the original file unmodified. Then I removed the ESC(D command entirely, then I changed 78 28 to 28 50, then I sent the command with all four bytes 0, and finally we printed the original again, to guage changes in the printer itself due to warming up. So the ESC(D command *appears* to be spurious.
