I've found the problem with variable dot mode.  It's a real braino
type of thing -- when I cleared out the bit vector, I only cleared out
the first half (didn't multiply it by the bit depth).

While I was at it, I found a couple of other bugs in that code, both
of which I fixed.  So you should now have a hope of printing and
actually getting something halfway rational out in variable dotsize
mode.  Then we just have to tune it.

David, could you try again on your 900?

Eric, when you get a chance, could you fix the simulator to get the
shape right (double the width)?
