I took out the fancy 8-byte ESC(c command and replaced it with the
conventional 4-byte variant.  This might help people with 740's.
Could someone give it a try?

Also, would people on this list like to receive CVS commit messages?
I'm receiving them myself, but it occurred to me that people might
like to know what's going on without actually having to take updates.
