The problem as I understand it from Roy Harrington is that ESCP/R (the protocol used to communicate with these newer printer) is a totally different and it's hard to identify channel selections (if channel selection are even a think anymore because it’s an RGB protocol apparently). But essentially you need to scrape the data from the USB communication or print-file? when you print a Photo Black glossy print and another one with Matte Black but essentially the same settings otherwise. This way it’s easier to identify any changes to the data. I’m sure Robert can elaborate.
