Anne-Marie,
The most likely explanation is that the printer was added with the wrong
backend. Please remove the printer and re-add it -- you will most
likely see the printer listed twice; you will need to make sure you
select the printer with the "gutenprint53+usb" connection instead of
"usb"
That should get you to the point where you can print successfully.
