I am the maintainer for the Canon inkjet driver in gutenprint.

Can you be more specific? Which resolution modes have you tried? Are
you using plain media? Does black and white (monochrome) print fine
for you?
If we are going to debug, it would be best to try the modes for plain
media first.

For plain media, the following modes can be selected:
  600x600 DPI
  300x300 DPI HIGH -> untested
  300x300 DPI
  300x300 DPI DRAFT
All of them can print in monochrome, and in colour. It would be good
to know how they work, starting from the bottom (draft).

I am not sure what that means, do you mean you could not print a CUPS test page?

Latest gutenprint does not install on MacOSX (actually, no versions
install in latest MacOSX at the moment), but this printer has not seen
any changes recently, so your gutenprint version is fine.
