There seem to  be a lot of variables.  My understanding is that the problem occurs during the use of Ubuntu.  What about the Mac computers, is there the same problem with the Mac computers?  Does one print black on one computer and fine on the other?  Perhaps the best test would be to print a test page on all of the platforms (operating systems).  That should narrow it down fairly quickly.
