This is indeed the case.  We will have to get Apple's stamp for it to be installed under Catalina.  I have moved the issue to a new thread --  mac OS Catalina 10.15.x installation

Gutenprint has not been tested with that system.  However, the most likely problem is you Security setting.  Open System Preferences --> Security.   Make sure the choice for installing software is set to App store and identified developers.  The Gutenprint installer is properly signed by a recognized developer for mac os software.

Oliver, I have found the problem.  As of now, the Gutenprint installer will not work with mac os 10.15.x Catalina.  Thank you for bringing this to the attention of Gutenprint.  I hope the issues can be resolved very shortly.  Gutenprint will find some way to indicate when the problem is solved and where to get an installer that will work
