It's not just my personal dislike of Apple -- The next major CUPS 
release will remove all support for PPD-based "CUPS Drivers".  This 
means that Gutenprint will cease to function on future MacOS releases.

You may want to consider grabbing a cheap Raspberry Pi and setting it up 
to be a print server; that will expose your printer as an IPP device and 
pretty much any client other than Windows will JustWork(tm) without any 
client-side drivers installed..
