Your printer is not a piece of junk. 

I think there are several fairly easy solutions.  The first thing to try is to make sure the G4 is set to wake on Network Activity.  You can make sure that is enabled by going to System Preferences -> Energy Settings.  There is a checkbox there to set that option.  Then make sure you have a print queue set up on the machine that runs 10.12.x.  Sending a print job should wake up the G4 and send it to the printer.

Second.  You mentioned an Ethernet network.  That would most likely mean either a switch or a router.  You should be able to attach the printer directly to the network.  All printers on the network would be able to access the printer then.
