The first thing to try is to make sure the G4 is set to wake on Network Activity. You can make sure that is enabled by going to System Preferences -> Energy Settings. There is a checkbox there to set that option. Then make sure you have a print queue set up on the machine that runs 10.12.x. Sending a print job should wake up the G4 and send it to the printer. Second. You mentioned an Ethernet network. That would most likely mean either a switch or a router. You should be able to attach the printer directly to the network.
