Yes, 'convert' is part of imagemagick.  If you look atutogen.sh in the gutenprint/scripts directory of either CVS or the distribution tarball, you will see the check for 'convert'.  

If you run the autogen.sh script without having 'convert' installed, you will get a warning saying you must have 'convert' to build the Gutenprint user's guide.  The alert message will then point you to the URL to get imagemagick.
