[Gimp-print-devel] dithering stuff

I ran a few experiments just now.  For the test patterns that I use,
I've found that ordered dither works very nicely, but I just tried
printing a thumbnail of a photograph, and the ordered dither looks
awful.  Random Floyd-Steinberg works best for that.

This should come as no real surprise to anyone, but I think that
having the choice of dithering algorithms really comes in handy.  At
some point this should feed into a set of default profiles for
photographs, line art, etc. (which we have a start on).

I'm really looking forward to (hopefully) getting your stuff, Raph!

Indeed. I expect to be releasing it as GPL soon, as planned. However,
our son was just born yesterday, so I'm not doing things at 100%
efficiency yet.

Thanks for keeping me up to date - I'll do my best to do the same.

Well, mazel tov!  When everyone's settled down, perhaps your baby
pictures will make good tests of skin tones :-)

Bad timing... How could you do that when you are just about to release
important software... :-) Congratulations. Hope the mother and the baby
are doing fine.

You'll be pleased to hear I just did a GPL release of rinkj, including
the Even Toned screening algorithms. Go to
http://www.ghostprint.com/download/ .

Please feel free to integrate ETS into Gimp-print. Over the longer term,
as rinkj becomes more developed, it may make sense to use it as the
backend rather than trying to support all the different devices
yourself. I'm trying to design an architecture now that will help it
integrate with Ghostscript as well as other imaging API's. I'll
certainly keep you guys posted.
