Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 12:18:06 +0000 From: Ralph Corderoy <ra...@in...> Isn't now the time to take the plunge and rename gimp-print? The longer it continues under its current misleading name the more pain there will be in changing it. I've been referring to it as "gimp-print/stp" a lot. One possibility might be "stprint" or "STPrint". I just did a search on tess.uspto.gov and couldn't find anything matching. There's also nothing named stprint.org, although there is an stprint.com that's a business printing service (Shelton-Turnbull Printers) in Oregon. The conversation about a new name has been had before. The best I could suggest was `calico' for which the .org was available. It must be confusing for new users that they don't have to print from the Gimp and could be slowing take-up of gimp-print. Calico.org is now taken. -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Is there already a "gprint" project somewhere? It could be short for "generalized print", "gimp-print", etc. "ST" seems to infer it's only for stylus printers or something... -SteveK On Sun, Feb 18, 2001 at 11:32:47AM -0500, Robert L Krawitz wrote: > Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 12:18:06 +0000 > From: Ralph Corderoy <ra...@in...> > > Isn't now the time to take the plunge and rename gimp-print? Iris makes a file art wide format giclee (fancy name for inkjet) printer named "GPrint". As someone else has pointed out, st means stylus. How about basing it on `printer' or `to print' in another language, e.g. impresora.org. Ralph. |

Date: 13 Mar 2001 16:21:22 -0500 From: "Gene Heskett" <gen...@io...> It appears that lprngtool uses the rhs-printfilters/printerdb to devine a list of capabilities to present when 'adding' another printer profile to use to the printcap file. Do any of the local Red Hat users want to do the magic needed to integrate with the Red Hat printer setup stuff? -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Robert wonders: > Do any of the local Red Hat users want to do the magic needed to > integrate with the Red Hat printer setup stuff? One "instant" path might be to try using whatever Crutcher's stuff is from the impending next Red Hat release. It's based on magicfilter/lprng, and uses foomatic's mfomatic. So that might work, depending on how hard it is to use their beta packages on a current redhat. Alternatively, there are two redhat/lprng paths: - Install lpdomatic as for generic lprng by hand, and forget the *tools. This will give you lpr command line options for all the gimp-print knobs. - Engineer a rhs-printfilter/printerdb backend of sorts from the foomatic data. This was sort of always on my list, but rhs-printfilters has always been sort of klunky (well, really it's LPD that's klunky, printtool and such isn't half bad given the lpd limitations) such that I never got around to it. Of course the easiest thing to do is probably cups or pdq. They have sensible configuration mechanisms that make this a snap. -- Grant Taylor - gt...@pi... - http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/ Linux Printing Website and HOWTO: http://www.linuxprinting.org/ |
