It works! Well, OK, it's still printing, and it will be for quite a while, but it's definitely doing its thing here. It's started printing the second page (the dithering routine did the whole thing already), so I'm quite confident that it's working. There's no sign of any memory leak; while the memory consumed was excessive (80 MB), I suspect that that's Ghostscript's fault rather than the driver's. During the entire rendering phase the working set was about 4 MB, which is about right by my back of the printhead calculations. The bad news: performance is disastrous, both rendering and dithering. It took over 16 minutes of CPU time on a reasonably fast machine (450 MHz Celeron, approximately equivalent to a 450 MHz PII) to render a 15 page document (admittedly, this is at 720 highest quality, which isn't the fastest mode, but it's still faster than 1440). I haven't hit any color stuff yet, so we'll see how that does. The driver definitely doesn't optimize out blank parts of the page, which is important for good performance. Anyway, I'm basically a happy camper right now. We can always fix performance. (What's really ironic in a sense is that the document I'm printing out is some what's new for Open Windows that looks like it was some slide show generated by Sun back in 1993. I work for Sun in a performance group. I should be embarrassed.) This has me thinking the R-word, for obvious reasons. I took Henryk's stuff and hacked it into 3.1. It went in without too much grief. I haven't tested it yet. I've moved it back into the main print directory. The files that aren't GS-specific are built by means of 'make ghost' at top level after aclocal;autoconf;automake;configure. So this means maintaining only one source base from now on. The one thing that will have to be taken care of is this .36" business (in softweave mode the printing starts further down on the page than in microweave mode). The current solution's too ad hoc, and won't work for printers with different print head configurations. The right answer is to fix this in the escp2 driver. Anyway, I'm now one step closer to being able to dump Print Pro and get back to "real" Unix printing. Depending upon how good our dithering engine is compared with that of some of the other drivers, it might eventually be tempting to do much the same thing with other printers, at least temporarily (remember, in the long run we want to largely get rid of all our fine work!). This doesn't count as a milestone yet, because it isn't tested, but it's getting there... -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 11:34:35 -0500 From: Karl Heinz Kremer <kh...@kh...> I just a few minutes free time to test the latest version of the plugin with my stc740. It now actually puts ink on the paper roughly where it belongs :-) I've scanned the results and put them up at=20 http://home.rochester.rr.com/specht/test I've just committed something that will almost surely improve the printing. From: sh...@al... Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 16:39:37 +0900 Ok, I figured out why I was sometimes getting unexpected end of file errors with unprint. I was generating the input files like this: 1) start gimp 2) load test image 3) print test image to file 4) quit gimp 5) try to unprint test image Nothing wrong with that unless step 4 follows too closely after step 3. Gimp-print removes its UI dialog before the actual printing is finished, and if the user quits before the file is finished being written, then the file will be cut short. The Gimp puts its own progress bar on the image you're printing. Do we really need our own progress bar? |

Use the unprinter to sanity check the changes you make. A lot of the bugs we've been finding can be caught that way. That's a good point (although I haven't been able to get it to work -- it seems to want to eat all of my memory, and considering that I have 256 MB each of RAM and swap that's quite a lot). However, the problem is that I don't think any of us know what is and is not legal. > I am going to make one more change, and stop right there. The specific bug is that monochrome printing in > grayscale does not work properly. The patch is enclosed below. I have applied your patch. Additionally I have changed the code so that the "File" pseudoprinter is initialized which makes printing to a file possible again. Sorry for fiddling with "your" code, but you did not seem interested in fixing this after it was reported several times. What was this? I wasn't aware that File didn't work. Most likely I missed something somewhere... BTW, is there any interest from your side to implement the usage of the image resolution? It's a shame (if not a bug) that the Print plug-in ignores the resolution info. That's a useful suggestion, although it won't make 3.0. I envision it as something like a third radio button for the Scaling option which would be something like "[Print at] Natural Resolution". Actually, we're redesigning the GUI, so this is very timely. -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Sorry, my budget doesn't quite allow for that. I'll be home in four weeks and can do test prints then, but, that's still four weeks away. Eric |

Gimp-print removes its UI dialog before the actual printing is finished, and if the user quits before the file is finished being written, then the file will be cut short. Probably the best thing to do is to throw up a progess bar to explicitly show what's going on and then if the user still quits while the progess bar isn't yet at 100%, then, he deserves what he gets. Any of you GUI guys want to tackle this? Eric |

People who want to experiment with different dither algorithms are welcome to. Just be aware that good dithering isn't easy. As for the 740 and other new printers, I think someone with one of these printers is going to have to pick up the slack. The turnaround time between my trying something, somebody else not getting it to work, and getting the news shuffled around is entirely too long. I am going to make one more change, and stop right there. The Windows printout from the 750 that someone gave me had a completely undocumented ESC(D command. Actually, he gave me two different printouts, one at 720 and one at 1440, printed at different parts of the page, and the ESC(D commands were identical. I will put these in, and commit the result. Then I plan to keep my hands off this stuff for now, since I'm not getting anywhere with it. I'm happy to discuss it and offer ideas, but it's simply too hard for me to do this by remote. This message was sent from Geocrawler.com by "Thorsten Schnier" <tho...@sc...> Be sure to reply to that address. Hi, My name is Thorsten Schnier, I've been looking at the progress made on the gimp print driver with a lot of hope, and thought I can at least test versions on my printer while it is still working (mechanical difficulties). I downloaded the latest CVS version (11/02/00) and tried 360 and 720 modes: 360dpi mode: works, but is much more grainy than windows 360 dpi output, has less detail and clarity. 720dpi microweave: prints 4 or 5 head movements only, then stalls, head does short forward-backward motions. 720dpi softweave: prints either random text pattern or empty pages. Small interface problem: A4 papersize missing. Not much luck yet... thorsten Geocrawler.com - The Knowledge Archive |

Hi all, Unprint seems to have stabilized. The current version in CVS probably justifies a version number of 0.8 or something like that. The ESCP2 code parsing and pnm image generation code seem stable. The CMYKcm -> RGB code is "stable" but it's a 5 minute cheap hack that produces terrible results. This needs work. Please play with this code and let me know if you have any problems. Eric |

I removed the ESC6 commands from the softweave code. The printout I have from Windows does not include these commands, so maybe they're spurious... -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Is part of the image OK, but part of it messed up? > Oh foo, I think I know what the problem is. You're probably > seeing it in landscape mode, but portrait mode probably works > fine. No, this was in portrait mode. I then went on to try landscape and it's totally screwed up, you get the required output squashed horizontally into half of the page and junk in the other half! What's the shape of the image? Is it square, rectangular, which side is longer, what are the dimensions... I think I'm going to have to write a "hp_unprint" program to save some paper! |
