Do you try the latest available version for the 2.4 branch (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-app/GIMP-2.4-rc3-intel.dmg?download)?

I can't answer for the original poster, but the latest available version for PowerPC is still 2.2.11. That version produces such a crash after opening X11 and showing a font caching progress dialog. I'd be happy to test any 2.4 RC on ppc, but unfortunately there's only one for Intel...

Some people have this problem and I have NOT. One of the guy in trouble showed the error log, and it looked that /usr/bin/open-x11 does not exist in his environment. I read in another world that in Leo, open-x11 no longer exists since Leo does not need it anymore. Searching in my environment, I found that the open-x11 exists in my /Previous System/usr/bin, which may be the reason why I have not encountered the problem.

So, the ultimate solution seems to change the startup script in the Gimp.app so that it does not use open-x11 and follow the shuold-be Leopard manner for it.

2.4 builds from Wilber-Loves-Apple community work on Leopard, i think this bug can be closed
